Protonmail can turn logging on/off - identifies political activist to police

Protonmail’s privacy credentials just took a hit: ProtonMail logged IP address of French activist after order by Swiss authorities – TechCrunch

Basically they switched on logging of their customer’s information in order to identify a French anti-gentrification activist. So while they advertise no logging, that doesn’t mean you won’t be logged, which is worrying. Concerning also is the international element (the customer was in another country), and the fact the crimes which justified the tracking seem relatively minor (occupying a building to protest house prices).

Protonmails argument is that they were required by local Swiss law to comply with Europol, and therefore the French police request. Ouch!
